Most Indian citizens need a visa to visit Japan for tourism. Japan does not offer visa on arrival to Indian passport holders, so the visa must be arranged before you travel.
Which visa to apply for
Indian tourists usually apply for a short-term tourist visa. According to the Embassy of Japan in India, single-entry tourist visas for Indian applicants have been issued electronically as an eVISA since 1 April 2024. Multiple-entry visas and visas for other purposes are still issued as a sticker in your passport.
Fees and where to apply
Applications are submitted through VFS Global’s Japan visa centres in India, which serve the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. Listings published by the embassy show a fee of INR 500 for a single- or multiple-entry tourist visa, plus a separate VFS service charge. Check the current fee before you pay, because charges can change.
Documents to prepare
